Call for Abstracts

Updated June 14th, 2010

Submissions of original work are now being accepted for presentation at the 9th annual International Society for Disease Surveillance (ISDS) conference to be held in Park City, Utah, December 1-2, 2010. This year’s conference will focus on enhancing the synergy between research, informatics, and practice in public health. Topics that address the conference theme and/or international surveillance and collaboration are especially encouraged.

The ISDS Conference is the premier annual scientific gathering for researchers and practitioners in public health, epidemiology, health policy, biostatistics and mathematical modeling, informatics, computer science, and related fields focused on biosurveillance and emerging challenges to public health practice. The conference will feature internationally renowned speakers from health departments, leading universities, government agencies, and top industrial organizations.

For abstract themes and submission guidelines, please see Types of Submissions below.

All presenters are required to register for the conference and sign the necessary disclosure forms. Accepted abstracts will be made available online through the ISDS website.

The four themes for abstract submissions are:

  • Public health surveillance
  • Analytics/research methodologies
  • Informatics (applications/practice and architecture/integration/interoperability)
  • Applications of methodologies to new domains

Oral Presentations
Authors of accepted oral presentations will present their work at the symposium. Oral presentations should ideally describe work that has not previously been published or presented.

Posters
Posters are the preferred format for presenting preliminary research and results of small scale studies; describing experimental projects/programs or works in progress; and reporting biosurveillance system descriptions. Poster sessions are designed to offer direct access to the authors in a way not possible through oral presentations.

Accepted posters will be displayed for the duration of the conference. In addition, at least one author must be present at the poster reception. Electrical power will not be supplied to individual posters at the time of the presentation.

Format Guidelines

Submitted abstracts for oral presentations and posters should be formatted as follows:

Size: One page (8.5 x 11 inch paper size) with one inch margins left, right, top, and bottom.

Title: 14 point Times Roman typeface, single column, bold, centered, upper and lower case using initial capitals for each word in the title other than articles and prepositions.

Authors: Author names, credentials, institutions, and locations should be below the title, in 12 point Times Roman typeface, single-column, bold, centered, upper and lower case using appropriate capitals. Institutions should also be in italics.

Abstract Body: single-spaced in 10 point Times Roman typeface, justified, two-column format with 0.5 inch between columns.

The abstract should be structured, i.e. Objective, Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions, and References.
