The U.S. health care industry will undergo a major transition when it moves from ICD-9 CM to ICD-10 CM/PCS in 2015. This transition will have a significant impact on public health surveillance systems and activities which are secondary consumers of ICD-9 coded data. For example, public health programs rely on the receipt of ICD-9-CM coded data to conduct syndromic surveillance, identify cancer cases, support worker illness and injury surveillance programs, and enhance real time public health situation awareness. It is imperative that public health agencies begin to prepare their systems, modify current business processes, and train their workforce for a seamless transition to consume ICD-10 coded data and ensure continuity of surveillance services and functions.
