Description

Many public health programs use hospital administrative and claims data for assessment and surveillance purposes. They are preparing their data collection processes to make the transition from accepting data coded with ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM in preparation for the October 1 implementation date set by Congress. MapIT is a tool that was developed with funding from AHRQ and CDC to support these transition efforts. It is an automated mapping tool that utilizes the General Equivalence Mappings (GEMS), developed by CMS, to provide both forward and backward or reverse mapping between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10 code sets to assure all relevant codes are identified. Prior training was presented in June 2014 on an earlier version of MapIT. This session will refresh information given previously and provide a walk-through of the updated mapping tool.

Learning Objectives

Participants will…

  1. Gain or refresh understanding of ICD mapping logic.
  2. Be able to understand and use the GEM flags.
  3. Learn how to apply results of mapping queries through observing the mapping examples.
  4. Comprehend when and how to use the Single Lookup search and the Batch Lookup search.
  5. Be able to recognize, save, interpret and apply a MapIT results output file.
